A gaming desk, practical alternatives.

Posted in Furniture, Gaming, Home Entertainment on by Jerry

You know, when I started this site, I wanted it to be more of a practical nature.  Not so much cutting edge, just released gadgets, but things that people would be interested in… gadgets and nifty things that have a use.

With a few exceptions, I've pretty much stuck to my guns.  There is, however, one particular item I've noticed gets a lot of hits here… and that's the Roccaforte ultimate gaming desk article.

While the Roccaforte desk is indeed something to drool over, it is an expensive solution.  I'd like to point out that there are some other options available, please follow along:

Ikea has a desk called the "Jerker."  Yes, the name sucks, but the desk, when fully equipped is quite nice.  Check out these links for more info:

Pretty cool eh?  The base unit can be had from Ikea for around $129.  The add on "wings" and accessories are variable cost, depending on what you want to add.  The whole unit is extremely customizable and adaptive to your gaming personality.  Check a google image search for more photos of what others have done with their Ikea Jerker Desk.

AnthroAnother desk manufacturer that you may want to consider is Anthro.  They've made really nice products for some time; quite rugged, and capable of handling massive loads — as well as being extremely customizable.  Anthro might be a heavier hit on the wallet than Ikea, but IMHO, the price you pay will be worth the product you get.

Bean BoardWhile probably not ergonomically correct, I have a board (purchased from walmart) that has a beanbag attached to the base; ala BeanBoard (pictured) or other inexpensive models.  This allows one to sit at ease on the sofa in the living room while using a laptop, or perhaps even at your desk with your keyboard and mouse on the lapdesk.  Arm and wrist fatigue is horrendous when you're trying to click furiously.

Nethrone Gaming Desk and ChairLet's throw budget and practicality out… There's always the aforementioned Roccaforte desk, or how about the netthrone?  See the pic, and follow the link for more info.

At a cool $2500 (estimated, more or less,) this chair may be the solution to that back and pain in the neck issue you have after a long stint of gaming fun…

Whatever you do, don't forget about the essentials, from gaming mouse pads, to chairs… (I'll try to cover some of these in the near future, in the mean time…) here's a teaser for those XBox and Playstation peeps:

Gaming Chair

Circuit city has the AK Designs Rocking Gaming Chair for a measly $80.  If you live in front of your large screen TV and Play console games, this may be an option for you; desks are usually not necessary for console games, right?

If you're a WII player… you're out of luck, I don't know that furniture has been engineered for all those zany moves and spastic gestures you're (not) required to make.

I'd really like to hear about other options, please feel free to post back with the URL's to other gaming desk options!

Until later! Happy (and safe) gaming!

I’ve been very let down by the lack of inspiration in an affordable gaming desk console or adjustable dual surface desk, worse still is finding one with space for two large monitors. The bulk of the home office desk market is flimsy, unsafe, uninspired, ugly, and built to be discarded. Cable management is a joke, sharp corners, sharp metal, flimsy material, its all a joke.

CAMT / Medical carts come close to what I’d like to see, but are priced out of the realm of a mortal budget.

I like Biomorph as it looks nice, has the space I need in the Pro unit, appears to have bomb proof construction and nice surfaces, + dual tier but comes in at a gorilla sized price tag. Anthro’s fit console unit might fit the bill if they ever have a sale on it again, I’ve watched for the better part of a year and they’ve had a sale on everything that I could care less about. I’d like to see them take the elevate corner unit and make something more affordable based on it. I don’t need an electric / hydraulic elevate system. Just let me crank it up with a removable hand crank and I’m good to go.

I’m starting to think that I’m faced with making my own design and having the surfaces cut and laminated locally. If I motivate myself sufficiently, maybe I’ll make a DIY page on such a undertaking.
